John Calipari Calls ESPN Anchor a 'Jagoff' Live on Air

John Calipari, of the newly minted no. 1 team in the nation, joined John Buccigrass on Sportscenter via telephone to talk about his top ranking. Buccigrass went through the standard line of questions, talking about expectations, blahblahblah, before asking about his Memphis team from a few years ago (close but so far away). Calipari got a little heated before asking Bucci if he was from northern Pennsylvania. Bucci admitted he was from Pittsburgh and Coach Cal’s response to that was a very, very classic, “Okay, so you’re a jagoff. Basically you’re a jagoff.” 1:30 mark …

Of course, this would be beyond hysterical, if Cal and Bucci were sitting in a bar and not, you know, on live television. Instead, we’re forced to hit up the Urban Dictionary, who reminds us that “jagoff” literally means “jackoff” in Pennsylvanian, which, of course, is not exactly the most appropriate term to pull of on ESPN.

Update: Coach Cal is now claiming, via Twitter natch, that it was all a setup and that Buccigrass was in on the whole jagoff thing:

‘John Buccigross & I go back 10 yrs. We’re both from Pitt. It’s a term of endearment & we went back n forth using that term b4 we went on-air’

I’m not sure it’s a “term of endearment” (although, in fairness, I’ve only been to western Pennsylvania and when I found out they don’t sell beer in gas stations, I ran away as fast as possible.
